Summary: Surprisingly, the Bible offers information on the use of medicinal plants and healthy eating. =========================================================================== Fortunately, many people today are taking an interest in their health instead of relying totally on doctors to get and keep them well. However, their efforts are sometimes discouraged because of the conflicting information they are encountering. Is there any reliable source of information on health and nutrition to which Americans have easy access? Yes, there is. Surprisingly, the Bible offers information on the use of medicinal plants and healthy eating. The seeker of such knowledge from God's word should realize that this information is not always easily recognized in scripture. This is why many treasures of the Bible are still escaping some people who are reading it. Psalm 51:7 says, "purge (cleanse) me with hyssop, and I shall be clean. Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow." Elsewhere in the Bible, God speaks of cleansing even the most vile of sinners who repent and turn to him, washing their sins away until they are whiter than snow. King David compares this spiritual cleansing to a natural and physical cleansing with Hyssop. Hyssop is an herbal plant widely available today. It has successfully been employed in the treatment of quinsy, asthma, colds, and coughs. Its leaves are applied to inflammations and bruises to remove discomfort and discoloration. It has been used to kill lice and in the treatment of insect stings and bites. The above scripture is only one of many that teach man about the kind of diet he should follow and the medicinal plants that God provided in abundance for his ailments. Those who become students of the Bible's teachings on health would do well to use the herbs and foods mentioned, in their natural state as far as possible. This amounts to restricting oneself to the use of "bulk" herbs, preferably organically grown or gathered from the wild. Health food stores attempt to entice customers to purchase expensive capsules, pills, tinctures and other extractions, bottled herbal formulas, herbal wines, and many other man-made concoctions. Bulk herbs are still available, but they may have to be ordered if the local health food store doesn't carry them. Penn Herb company sells bulk herbs at very reasonable prices and is easily found on the Internet. There's even a recipe for bread found in the Bible and that bread is sold in stores today! Ezekiel 4:9 reads, "take thou also unto thee wheat, and barley, and beans, and lentils, and millet, and fitches, and put them in one vessel, and make thee bread thereof...." Could God have been any plainer in teaching man that he is to use whole grains to make his bread? The scripture does not say to degerminate them first, a process which strips away the nutrients.
